![]() While this may have been the worst flooding ever seen on the Schoharie, this was not the first time the creek had flexed its muscles. Schoharie Creek, unlike most of the other Catskill streams, flows north to the Mohawk River. ![]() One publication described the Village of Prattsville as "drowned." Prattsville sits on the banks of the upper Schoharie Creek which, along with other rivers and streams, exploded over its banks. The storm did tremendous damage to the Catskill region. Orange County took a beating, but to a lesser extent than did Ulster and Schoharie counties. Irene's swath of destruction moved through New York City, north through the Catskill Mountains, across the Mohawk River, continuing north into the Adirondack Mountains. More than seven million homes and businesses lost power during the storm, and Irene caused at least 45 deaths and more than $7.3 billion in damages (although I've seen reports putting that figure much higher than reported here). Irene made its final landfall as a tropical storm in the New York City area and dropped torrential rainfall in the Northeast that caused widespread flooding. Most of the damage came from falling trees and power lines. It made landfall in North Carolina as a Category 1 storm, then moved northward along the mid-Atlantic coast as it barreled into Virginia and Maryland. It was in August 2011 that Hurricane Irene struck the east coast of the United States.
